Barkly Shire Draft Business Plan

The release of this Draft Business Plan for represents a major milestone in the transformation of local government in the Barkly Region and for local and regional governance more generally.

The Plan outlines the governance and operational processes for the Shire, and a number of strategic objectives of communities and residents in the Barkly Region.

The Plan has benefited from the input of a number of people and organisations.

Existing Councils in the region have provided input through the Barkly Shire Transition Committee, and members of this body have given generously of their time and energy to contribute to Shire development.

This has included discussions on proposals for representation and governance, service delivery and strategic directions for the Shire Council.

The contribution of Committee members and other observers is gratefully acknowledged.

Barkly Shire Council

The Tennant Creek Town Council will be dissolved on 30 June 2008 to make way for the Barkly Shire Council.

On the 11 October 2006 the Minister for Local Government announced the Northern Territory Government�s reform program for local government.

The reform will result in a new framework of municipal and shire councils that will incorporate the whole of the Northern Territory by 1 July 2008.

As part of the reform initiative, the Minister announced the establishment of a Local Government Advisory Board, which will report directly to the Minister to enable the local government sector and related stakeholders to be closely involved in the reform process.

The Department has prepared a number of New Local Government Information Resources to keep all Territorians informed about the reform process.
