Appar Wangkiji-Kari Protocols

ProtocolsAppar Wangkiji-Kari is the Council of Elders and Respected Persons.

These are their protocols which are based on traditional customary laws for behaviour and respect and have been taken from the Warramungu Customary Laws.

These laws and rules have been known to most Aboriginal groups throughout the country for thousands of years

The Laws of Respect

  • Respect for Your own country
  • Respect for other people's country
  • Respect for the decisions of the Elders
  • Respect for Yourself
  • Respect for Your family
  • Respect for other Aboriginal People

In the old times visitors asked for permission to enter and stay in a community outside of their own country.

  • Recognising and respecting your own country and other people's country is very important.

Laws of Behaviour

  • It is customary law to obey local rules and respect the traditional owners’ decisions and Aboriginal Community values.
  • It is customary law to obey local rules about places and where to go and where not to go.
  • It is customary law for visitors to leave when requested by the elders

In the old times behaviour was controlled within each family group.

  • Each family is responsible for its own member's behaviour.
