400 to 500 dogs are registered in Tennant Creek per year and Council receives many more dog complaints a year.
De-sexing your dog is encourged, registration for de-sexed dogs is much cheaper than registering a intact dog.
Regular exercise for your dog is encouraged, most Council Parks can be used to exercise your dog on a leash. Take some plastic bags and clean up after your dog.
Bored dogs bark and annoy the neighbours - and barking dogs can attract unnecessary disharmony with neighbours who may exercise their rights under law.
Make sure you keep your dog locked in your yard - strays can attract a fine of $80 if registered $100 plus regisistration fee for unregistered dogs.
All dogs older than six months of age must be registered with the Council.
Unregistered dogs may be seized by the Council and the owner summonsed to appear in court for the offence of keeping an unregistered dog (whether in the owners yard or not).
Seized dogs will only be released from the pound if regisitration fees and pound fees are paid. Regisisted dogs must wear their identification tags at all times so that if your pet is lost it can be returned easily to you.
Dog Registration notices are sent out each year in July. All registrations run from the 1st July to the 30th June.
A maximum of 2 dogs can be kept on your property within the Town Boundary.
If you want to keep more than 2 dogs on your property you must apply for a kennel licence, your property will be inspected by the Animal Control Officer to ensure adequate facilities are provided and if approved it will cost $100 plus registration fees.

The Tennant Creek Town Council has a by-law for control of dogs so that people and dogs can live together harmoniously in the community.
Under the Council by-law, owners that let their dogs run around at large may be issued with an infringement notice and their dogs impounded.
Unregistered dogs that are picked up by the Animal Control Officer are taken directly to the Council's dog pound.
What you should tell the Council
- If you move from your current address, whether you are moving across town or out of town.
- If you give away or sell your dog.
- If your dog runs away and does not come back.
- If you get your dog desexed.
- If your dog dies
There is no permanently based vet service in Tennant Creek, however Council sponsors fortnightly visits by a vet from either the Alice Springs Vet Clinic 8952 9899 or the Katherine Vet Clinic 8972 3599.
Council maintains a vet clinic for their use at the Council depot.
