Cemetery
When Local Government commenced in Tennant Creek, in 1978, it took over the management of the cemetery.
Recorded burials date back to 1936. There were some burials prior to this but only the names were recorded and not the dates.
At the instigation of the community, Council has been gradually upgrading the cemetery and further upgrades are planned.
Upgrading works include:
- marking the location of each grave;
- levelling the ground and removing weeds and termite mounds;
- laying cracker dust;
- erecting surround fencing;
- installing irrigation;
- planting shrubs and trees;
- installing seating; and
- fabricating and placing headstones and plaques on those graves without headstones or monuments.
No existing monuments placed by family members have been removed.
Should any family members wish to erect their own headstones on the graves, the Council will remove the headstones they placed there.
