Tennant Creek is also known as the ‘Golden Heart of the Northern Territory’ because it was the site of Australia’s last major gold rush in the 1930s.
In the past, 6.5 million onces ( over 210 tonnes) of gold has been produced here.
New prospects are currently being explored to the west of town (the Rover field) and work is due to commence on reworking the tailings from the Peko mine to the East of town.
Mining for gold continues today along with other valuable minerals including, silver and copper while the Bootu Mine has just commenced exporting manganese to China.
Exploration has recently commenced to the South East of town for unspecified minerals.
